EPA Lead Fact Sheet: A Consumer Tool for Identifying Point of Use (POU) Drinking Water Filters Certified to Reduce Lead

Michigan Filter First

What is Michigan Filter First?
The legislation, collectively known as Michigan Filter First, requires schools and childcare centers to:

  1. Develop a drinking water management plan (DWMP)
  2.  Install filters that reduce lead levels in all drinking water fixtures
  3. Conduct annual tests of the filtered water.

The initiative encompasses two acts: the Clean Drinking Water Access Act (2023 PA 154) and amendments to the Child Care Organizations Act (1973 PA 116). Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed it into law in October 2023.
